What happens if you don't make a change?
Updated: Jun 6, 2018
It’s not easy to make changes in our lives, especially when we have other people and obligations to consider. Decisions we make about our own lives have consequences and impact the others around us.
But, what are the consequences of not make any changes and how does that impact those people?
How often have you experienced in your life staying in a situation because it’s easier? Maybe a relationship, a job, a marriage, a home, a school, a town. And often it is easier to stay, in the short term anyway. Eventually though, all the reasons that sparked off the initial train of thought that something isn’t right and that you aren’t happy come back and you end up feeling like you’re going round in circles. It often leads to #depression, #anxiety, #frustration, #lethargy, low self-confidence, low self-esteem, a feeling of not being in #control of your own life.
What about the time that you did make a change though? It probably felt like the hardest decision you’d ever made, you had probably been pushed as far as you could go and were desperate enough to do something about it. Or something else happened, out of your control, that forced you to make a change. What were all the feelings and emotions you experienced in the beginning? Amongst many, there was probably fear, loneliness, sadness, upset, anger, disappointment, shock, failure and so on. I’m sure you felt pretty awful.
What about the more empowering feelings that started to emerge though? We’re not so good at allowing ourselves to acknowledge those though are we? I have no doubt that there were also feelings of #relief, #optimism, #hope, #freedom, #strength, #positivity, #enthusiasm, #courage, #energy, #self-assurance, #confidence, #empowerment.
Hopefully it didn’t take long, but after you’d been brave enough to do something about the situation you will have seen positive consequences and impacts on those around you too. You will have started to feel happier and back in control of your life again, lighter and more optimistic about the future. Maybe you felt like you could do anything!
I know it’s not easy and I know how scary it can seem to make a change, but if we focus on the difficulty and the fear it paralyses us and we end up stuck until we’re desperate enough to do something about it.
But what if we focused on the other end of the scale? What if we told ourselves we would feel fantastic afterwards? We wouldn’t hesitate to take the first step would we?!
So, what needs to happen for you to make a change? What are you waiting for?
What would you tell you best friend to do in the same situation? Would you tell them that they deserve to be happy?
